A Noida-based company Ringing Bells said that it will launch India’s most affordable smartphone called Freedom 251 for a price of Rs 251.
The dual SIM phone will have 4-inch WVGA resolution display, 1.3 Ghz quad-core processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB storage space and a 3.2 PM camera on the back. It will also have 0.3 megapixel camera on the front. It will be powered by 1450 mAh battery.
The company also said bookings for the Freedom 251 will start from February 18 at 6 am and will close on February 21 at 8 pm.
The company also claimed that Defence Minister Manohar Parrikkar will launch the smartphone ‘Freedom 251’ on February 17.
Should customers belive this company’s claims?
Well, there are many opinions. One such is how will you get a phone at Rs 251 when the basic cost of hardware for building a smartphone is around Rs 1200?
Some experts like Nitin Pai also questioned the possibilty of a government subsidy.
There is a hint that the government is subsidising this project, which appears unlikely, because there was no publicly-announced selection process that awarded the project to Ringing Bells. There will be serious questions relating to transparency if indeed the government has subsidised the project without due process.
Will you book this phone? As for me, I’m just gonna wait and see what the buyers say first 😉
